Ultrasonic soundwaves first used to detect internal defects in material in 1931 by German licenced. Industrial equipments started to used commonly in 1940s. Advances in electronic technology provide ultrasonic testing more practical and one of nondestructive testing methods.
Principals of ultrasonic testing is, high frequency soundwaves produced by probe are propogates into material and if any discontiniuty soundwaves reflects back to probe.
These waves transfered electrical signal and displayed on CRT screen. Range and height of echos Defines the defects locations. Commonly used technique of ultrasonic testing is pulse echo. Slag Inclusion, porosity, cracks, lack of fusions etc in welded parts casting defects, lamination check, thickness measurement and corrosion are inspected by ultrasonic testing.
